If you know me personally then you know I've slowly transitioned into a non-toxic lifestyle. And if I'm being honest, it's not even about me, it's about my family. At first when I transitioned into this lifestyle, I had no clue what to even look for. I was using Bath & Body works products because I thought they smelled amazing. I doused myself in perfume everyday because I loved it so much. It wasn't until my sweet friend Morgan shared "The Never List" with me and opened my mind to a world of education. On this list is a compilation of all the top ingredients to avoid when choosing your everyday products. There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today. I had no idea that petroleum is one of the main ingredients in mascara. Or that it only takes around 15 seconds after application for the ingredients in your lipstick to get into your system. Or that "antiperspirant" was a bad thing, until I was made aware. Now, I'll admit that it's quite the black hole when getting into the non-toxic realm. There is a multitude of information out there. It takes a lot time and patience to learn the chemicals, what they do, how to avoid them and what to look for. But honestly, now that I have it down pat, I don't think twice about buying something that isn't non-toxic. I understand that everyone has a choice in life, either they want to commit to change, or they want to remain the same. I have faced a little bit of controversy throughout this process. A lot of people in my life just don't care, or they think I'm coo coo. Haha! Either way, I am so thankful I decided to educate myself a few years ago. And the thing about education is that it never stops. Since my choice was clearly change, I have been committed to making better choices when deciding the products I use 97% of the time. I have detoxed our entire house of toxic filled products. The only one I haven't let go of is bleach and my excuse for that is well, I live with two young boys and a man, clean is clean. Haha! One of the first things I changed in my personal daily life was my deodorant. I used to always buy that cheap Dove kind that was 4 in a pack for less than 10 bucks. What a steal right? I am so thankful that I know better now. Did you know that you're supposed to sweat? It's both natural and normal to do so. Antiperspirants cause our body to block our pores from doing what they naturally do, sweat. The first thing I did when switching deodorants was detox my pits for an entire week. Gross, I know right??! Pretty sure Rialand complained about 50 times regarding my pits smelling. Haha. I didn't care because I knew I had made this choice for my health. Studies have shown that the ingredients in deodorant have been linked to breast cancer. What a scary thought. One of the main ingredients in main stream deodorant is aluminum. If you think about it, we start putting on deodorant when we're young teenagers and we don't stop until we die. How many chemicals do you think we are exposing to our bodies every single day? Not only in our deodorant, but in everything we use. Think toothpaste, shampoo, hand soap, shaving cream, lotion, makeup, the list goes on and on. I was reading a blog post earlier by Holley Gerth and she mentioned that someone once told her, "If you can't be an example, then be a warning." I strive to be both in this lifestyle journey I am on. There are an unbelievable amount of hormone disrupting chemicals in our everyday products. When you know better, you do better. I hope that you'll try to make a small switch in the products that you buy and use. Non-toxic products are becoming more and more prevalent in stores today so don't fret! You can always always find a better alternative to what you buy, whether that be food or products. Two incredible resources I use are EWG and Beauty Counter. There is a free downloadable app for EWG. EWG stands for the Environmental Working Group. They are a corporation dedicated to empowering people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. From this app you can scan most products in stores and it will rate the product for you, showing you how harmful it is. Beauty Counter is a kick-butt company dedicated to fighting for better regulations and less chemicals in our products. P.s. Rialand and I have both been using all natural Schmidt's deodorant for several months now and we love it! Check out their website here. You can also find it in health foods stores like Wegmans, Whole Foods, and sometimes Marshall's.
Need some proof that change is necessary? Here are some statistics for you:
In the past decade Europe has banned over 1,400 chemicals.
The U.S. has only partially* banned 30.
1938 was the last time a regulation was made in the beauty industry regarding the ingredients in our personal care products.
