Wrong. I know what you're thinking, how could shampoo possibly be bad for me? It's shampoo, I use it every day. Trust me, I know how you feel. But I'm here to shed some light on this subject. When I got into the world of non-toxic living a few years ago, my shampoo and conditioner were the first things to go. I knew it smelled too good to be true. Not to mention I also knew that those scents couldn't have been created from natural ingredients, and what do ya know, I was right. I know that this non-toxic world is HUGE now. There's an influx of information out there. How do you know where to look? What to read? It all starts with a simple list. If you check out my blog post on non- toxic products here, you'll find that list of pesky ingredients to avoid.
One of the biggest things to look for in your hair and other products is a sneaky little word called, fragrance. The word fragrance has tons and tons of harmful chemicals within it, but the government doesn't care about this. Unfortunately, it falls under the guidelines of "safe". More like safe enough, right? They clearly allow it and "let it slide". I'm guessing there are bigger fish to fry than what ingredients are in our everyday products. But that's what makes it even more worrisome. You're probably thinking to yourself fragrance, hmm, isn't that what makes everything smell so good? The answer is yes, but what ingredients are in that so called good smelling stuff? We don't really ever know what makes up fragrance, it's just a generalized term thrown out there for use. 9 times out of 10 when you see the word fragrance, it's made up of synthetic chemicals, not natural.
Another thing to watch out for is parabens. What are parabens? Well for starters they are used in beauty products as a preservative. Just like preservatives are used in canned food products to make the shelf life longer. Secondly, they are known to cause hormone disruption and increase your risk of cancer. Scary right?! Exactly why shampoo can be that bad for you.
I think one of the main reasons why people aren't buying non-toxic products is because they have no idea where to buy them or what the brand names are. One of my favorite places to buy non-toxic products is health foods stores. Places like Trader Joes, Wegmans, Whole Foods, and sometimes Target.
There are several reasons why non-toxic products are flooding the shelves of stores in 2018. There are SO many activists in today's times. People who care about what goes into our products and more importantly what goes into our bodies. I cannot tell you how thankful I am for people who care. It has changed my life and I know it can change yours too.
It takes less than 30 seconds for any ingredient to be absorbed into our skin and make it's way into our bloodstream. So the next time you reach for that shampoo bottle at the grocery store, check the back ingredients label before you buy it. If we know better, we can do better. One of my favorite resources for non-toxic products is the EWG.
